. legend has it that richard nixon heard that jfk was not going to get makeup from cbs for that debate, and so nixon said, well, i won't have any makeup either, then. even though he was running a 102 degree fever and not only was nixon ill that day, it turned out that when jfk turned down the cbs makeup offer, it was because he apparently had his own makeup arrangements already made. and so we got jfk with makeup and no fever, we got richard nixon with no makeup and a fever. what we got on tv in the first televised presidential debate in our nation's history was beauty and the beast. right? of course, jfk went on to win that election that year, whether or not it was because of the debate, i don't know, but thus was born the entire school of punditry that says it's all about the optics and watching things with the sounds off and all that existentially exhausting stuff we still say today. but here is the relevant context for understanding what happened last night. when mitt romney beat president obama in last night's televised debate. so the first televised presidential debate that we ha

week earlier, cbs says the move was necessary to make sure there are enough instructional days in each school quarter but he says changing their travel plans is going to cost hundreds of dollars. i'm glad the strike is over but it seems like we're continuing to pay the cost of the strike. >> this sepias calendar released today makes up for all seven school days missed while teachers were on picket lines and here is how the majority of students will lose two days from winter vacation they will have to report to school on january 3rd and fourth and the school year is like thinned to include june 19th-21st and june 24th, roughly one-third of students will lose one week from fall break meeting school will be in session october 15th-19th and an additional school day on june 19th and the school calendar also adds more professional development time for teachers which includes six half days for students. these calendar changes are another example of decisions being made without respect to parents, families it's just insult to injury. this is what jean-claude brizard had to say in a statement:

the president. 46% of undecided voters in a cbs poll gave the win to romney to just 22% for mr. obama. nearly a third of the undecideds were undecided. romney's positive rating rose above 50% for the first time in this campaign in a reuters poll. the president's ratings stayed unchanged at 56%. romney stayed on the attack even though his positions were to be charitable and flatly untrue. here's some of what he said about his tax plan and the economy. >> romney: i'm not in favor of a $5 trillion tax cut. my plan is not to put in place any tax cut that will add to the deficit. my view is we ought to provide tax relief to people in the middle class but i'm not going to reduce the share of taxes paid by high income people. we have 23 million people out of work. or stop look for work in this country. >> eliot: here's how the obama campaign responded to some of the claims. with an ad released this afternoon that relied on fact checkers. >> mitt romney has not laid out specifics for how he would pay for his tax cut. he says

as beard stick. he called frank stanton head of cbs news into the control room to see the stark disappearance of the candidates. he called ted rogers and said he was satisfied the way nixon looked. that's not the way the rest of the country saw it, when nixon started sweating through that beard stick. the next venue was nbc studios where we produce "hardball." wilson arrived with the kennedy brothers to figure out something was up. someone set the temperature to freezing. felt like a meat locker. jack said, what the hell is this? wilson remembers racing down to the basement looking for the air conditioning unit. there was a guy standing there that ted rogers put there for nixon and he said, don't let anybody change this pip said, get out of the way or i'm going to call the police. he immediately left and i changed the air conditioning back to normal. wilson understand the game and how it was going to be played. the candidates had their jobs to do, so did their handlers. he said his opponent, he said, he wanted to keep his job because of the screw-up that happened in the first de

the cbs poll and the cmn instant polls and the yen consensus is not divided along partisan lines. overwhelmingly people saw the president lost that not because they thought governor romney's tax plan adds up, not because they want to turn medicare into a voucher, it was purely, as far as i am concerned, style and confidence. > >> rose: when the governor says, you know, the rich will pay the same share they have been paying or more, he is right abou th? >> well, that is very hard to answer. because he said that, he said that will be a defining principle of his tax plan but he also laid out a number of defining principles and he cannot rit matically, a rit matically define all of those principles. he can choose not to compromise on that and say under absolutely no circumstances will the shared tacks pay by the rich go down but he can't then also have the scale of ghuts rates that he wants, and so i think we just don't know whether that is the case. what we know is he has been very specific about a cut in rates that would benefit the top a lot and he then said i will find ways to of
